Transportation advocacy organization Local Motion to host iCan Bike Camp in Columbia, Missouri

Local Motion is excited to announce the iCan Bike Camp, June 29–July 3 in Columbia, Missouri. The iCan Bike program provides experienced instructors and adaptive equipment to help people with disabilities learn to ride a two-wheel bike independently. The camp is a program of iCan Shine, a national organization that has provided quality learning opportunities in recreational activities for individuals with disabilities since 2007. According to the iCan Shine website, more than 80% of people with autism and 90% of people with Down syndrome never learn to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle. The program was founded to address that disparity, and provide opportunities for empowerment on two wheels.

The 2026 Mid-Missouri iCan Bike Camp will take place at the City of Columbia’s Northeast Event Center (formerly the Boone County Fairgrounds). The Mid-Missouri iCan Bike camp was previously hosted in Fulton, Missouri, under the leadership of volunteer coordinator Nancy Hanson.

Approximately 34 registered participants will attend the camp. Each rider will complete a 75-minute lesson Monday through Friday, with the goal of progressing to independent cycling on a standard two-wheel bicycle by the end of the week. Instructors from iCan Shine, Local Motion staff, and a team of volunteers will assist participants. Local Motion is collaborating with Columbia Parks and Recreation and Boone County Family Resources on the program. Veterans United Foundation provided generous grant support.

“Local Motion is thrilled to bring this program back to Columbia,” said Mike Burden, CEO of Local Motion. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and independence that comes with learning to ride, and we’re honored to be a part of that journey.”
